Photography Hack: How to Test New Photo Equipment Without Breaking Your Wallet

My philosophy going out into the photography world: Try it, Don’t Buy it!

Try It, Don’t Buy It!

If your equipment could ask you questions, what would it ask you?

They would probably be something like: Why are you taking me out today?

  • What is the purpose of your actions?
  • Are these the correct settings?
  • Why are you programing me today?

Creating a dialogue with your photography tools will most assuredly command great results even if you have self doubt, mainly due to you, the artist/ creator, willfully preparing and cultivating intention. Respecting your own time while giving yourself a chance without being too self critical, will allow for you to build upon what you do know while creating an environment of safety to explore your ideas uninhibited.

In this post We would like to offer solutions for photographers that have become desperate or indecisive  for change. This idea consists of the purposeful action on renting out equipment. If you’re gonna use the same tools over and over, rentals are not for you. Reason being it would make more sense to invest into the cost of owning it. On the other hand, let’s assume you want to get bigger jobs or even job variety, renting is the way. Just go rent it at your leisure or for work. The point is to not go into bad economics chasing your dream. A good example of this is when the best cameras over heated. Renting it and practicing with the camera would help you avoid this problem while on an actual assignment. If you went out and bought a 4 to 5000 dollar digital camera only to be bested by a old model or loose a client whats the point? Now if you tried the camera out on a not important day and figured this out, it would not cost you more time and resources in the long run for about 100 dollars give or take…understanding the point?

A lot of photographers come to the conclusion that having better equipment cuts production time in half. Personally, I believe people confuse that with shooting skills. If you are skilled photographer, you can shoot with a variety of lenses, cameras, and produce a great quality photo. In today’s world however, high mega  pixel’s doesn’t always translate to social media apps in full glory. Again, asking if these are the correct settings. We have also seen great cameras performing terrible due to lack of user friendliness, again, can be avoided but taking out a few hours to create dialogue with the equipment.

If you’re asking yourself, what is the use for the hi tech cameras with all the features and gadgets? Let me give you an example. I did 60 pictures from this set. This I had to edit on 2023 version of photoshop. That is supposed to be the latest version. The program crashed almost every picture, especially when trying to use certain tools. I went two weeks over schedule. In my hour of frustration, I decided to try 2023 Beta version of photoshop and let me tell you, it was the best decision I’ve ever made for my flow. It  processed all my photos well and when I export them or import them It was seamless. Both apps from the same brand are suppose to do the same thing, but one does it better, especially with better tools. That is what you should pay for: Performance not promise. What equipment best suits yours need for what you can give, or more importantly in a pro setting what you have been contracted for.

Canon R5 Body

For the shoot I rented a Canon R5 (45mp) camera with a 28mm to 70mm F2 USM lens and used them for most of the shoot, I also used my  Canon T6I (24mp) model with a 50 mm lens that I would inter-change out to 18mm to 55mm for faster shots that needed stability. Personally, for the nostalgic graduation look I love the older version with the 50mm.

Can you deny the R5 though? It has tons of details and editing on more mega pixels is amazing. I would say least difficulty editing I have had in a long time. Below, I have done my best to include photo examples from the photo session that highlight the differences in between which camera and lens were used. There are photos that are easy to tell the difference and some that I had to zoom in to see the difference compared at similar focal lengths. Editing can make differences even harder to tell the part.

If you have fewer projects, money is an issue, grab the camera you have and upgrade the lens. This will meet beautifully and the middle. If we look at Sony, the favorite a7S3 only has about 10 mega pixels for the photo taking ability, but the sensor is so great. With the glass, you can tell their photos apart from all other brands. When you want to attract bigger projects and your skill has wisdom, then, taking the time to have better equipment will allow you to produce something that people who want to buy quality are looking for.
